Originally described as Gladiolus corymbosus by Burman filius (Nicolaas Laurens Burman, 1734–1793, Amsterdam botanist) in 1768, transferred to Freesia by N.E. Brown. The epithet corymbosa refers to the corymb-like branching of the inflorescence.
