The subspecies andicola (= Andean) represents the high-altitude Andean populations, adapted to the cooler, more humid conditions of the cloud forest zone. Like all Ficus, it typically begins life as a hemiepiphyte, germinating in the fork of a host tree and eventually sending roots to the ground.
