Mature plants reach only about 5 cm across, with 7 to 10 very flat ribs marked by faint transverse grooves. Spination is minimal — up to six thin, almost hair-like whitish spines, darker at the tip and barely 3 mm long, pressed flat against the body — so that the plant reads almost as a small stone.
